About Me

When I was younger, I looked at school as a chore that everyone must endure. But I came to embrace learning with the guidance of my AP Government teacher. He presented the material in a manner that made me look forward to class and eager to do homework for it. Creating a similar atmosphere is something that I have strived for in my own teaching experiences. Upon graduating from university, I served as an AmeriCorps Member for an educational nonprofit at a local high school. My time was spent working with small groups of students on their coursework. With these students, I used applied research-based learning strategies in subject areas that the students needed assistance. I pushed to make a setting that would allow students to focus while enjoying the tutor group. It succeeded. They would often plead with me to take them out of class on dates that we were not scheduled and almost all of my students saw an increase in their grades. When my service contract ended, I moved to China and became an English teacher. During my time abroad, I managed my own classroom of elementary students, while occasionally working 1-on-1 with children and adults. This experience of living in a foreign country empowered my ability to communicate and keep a positive environment for learning. Switching the learning styles between visual, audio, and kinesthetic was essential in ensuring success for the Chinese students and myself. The passion that I have for learning and the desire to assist others in their own learning experience makes me a great candidate to tutor for you!
