I am persuasive and capable of developing rapport and trust, as well as experienced in influencing the attitudes and ideas of others.

I am a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and Duke University. I received my Bachelor's degree in History and my Master's degree in Religious Studies. Since graduation I have tutored students in American History and Biblical Hebrew, which were exceedingly rewarding experiences. I am especially passionate in helping students learn to think critically, and enjoy the process of learning. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I am most enthusiastic about tutoring in History and Writing because these subjects utilize skills that students will use and cultivate throughout their lives and are applicable for many careers. I would describe my teaching philosophy as hands on and project-based learning. I strive to include fun and relevant videos, songs, and activities into my curriculum to ensure the engagement of my students. Outside of academia I like painting, baking, hiking, photography, and having game nights with friends.

I have two years of experience tutoring elementary level reading and writing for two different families, and miscellaneous tutoring experience in the fields of French, English and Test Prep (SAT and ACT). As a co-founder and head editor of a publishing press at my college, for a year and a half I have run workshops where I assigned contemporary literature, and taught these pieces to deepen reader's comprehension. Currently I am teaching a class of high schoolers in a summer program offered by the publishing press. I have experience with World Literature and translation studies as well. I'm passionate about language and I'm passionate about understanding. I tailor my teaching to the student, and in that sense we grow together in an environment of patience, support, and love for learning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Middle school is a critical transition year where students often struggle with increased homework demands, multiple teachers, and more complex subject matter—especially in math and writing. Many students in Raleigh also face challenges with organization, time management, and adapting to a faster-paced classroom environment. Personalized tutoring helps students build these foundational skills while keeping up with their specific school's curriculum and expectations.
In a classroom of 20+ students, teachers have limited time to address individual learning gaps or adjust pacing for each student. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction allows tutors to identify exactly where a student is struggling, adapt their teaching style to match how that student learns best, and move at a pace that builds confidence. This targeted approach typically leads to faster improvement than classroom instruction alone, especially for students who need extra support or enrichment.
Yes. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who understand North Carolina's standards and the specific curriculum used in Raleigh schools. Whether your student attends a Wake County school or another district in the area, tutors can align their instruction with your student's textbooks, assignments, and upcoming assessments to ensure they're reinforcing what's being taught in class.
The first session is a chance for the tutor to assess your student's current level, understand their learning style, and identify specific areas where they need support. The tutor will also discuss goals—whether that's improving a grade, preparing for a test, or building confidence in a particular subject. From there, they'll create a personalized plan and start building a strong learning relationship with your student.
Tutors support all core middle school subjects including math (pre-algebra, algebra foundations), English/language arts (reading comprehension, writing, grammar), science, and social studies. Many also help with study skills, test preparation, and organization strategies. Whether your student needs help with a specific subject or support across multiple areas, Varsity Tutors can connect you with a tutor who specializes in middle school academics.
Many students show noticeable improvement in focus, confidence, and understanding within the first few weeks of consistent tutoring. Grade improvements and test score gains typically follow within 4-8 weeks, depending on the student's starting point and how frequently they meet with their tutor. Regular communication between you, the tutor, and your student helps track progress and adjust the plan as needed.
Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors who have strong subject expertise and experience working with middle school students. Many hold teaching degrees, have classroom experience, or have demonstrated mastery in their subject areas. All tutors are vetted for their ability to teach effectively and build positive relationships with students—which is essential for middle school success.
