I am originally from New York City and am a student at the University of Pennsylvania studying Political Science, Economics, and Psychology. Having gone through high school and the whole college process within recent memory, I am at the unique intersection of having a very current understanding of the challenges, and of having gained experience and perspective from college. I started tutoring as soon as I had real knowledge to share, which for me was in the eighth grade. In the way a six-year-old might feel an unwavering sense of duty and pride from being charged with returning scissors to the desk, I felt the true significance of the job I had been given. I am Martina Zandonella, I am Italian and I have lived in the USA since 2013. Before moving here I have studied in top British Universities and worked in private and public schools the UK. I am proud to say that the eleven-year-old Vietnamese girl and boy that I tutored for 5 years are both attending Medical school. I am passionate about learning, the arts, traveling, telling stories, and sharing experiences. I have a B.A. in Drama and Italian from Vassar College, where I graduated with general and departmental honors. As a Drama major, I focused on directing and dabbled in writing, performing, and costuming as well. I am completing my Ph.D. in Biblical Exegesis in the Department of History at York University (Toronto, Canada). My academic credentials include a MA in History from York University. In 2009-10, I worked on an MA in Philosophy at the Pontifical Urban University and completed about half of that program when I decided that I wanted to pursue a degree in Biblical Studies and, to that end, enter into a Ph.D. program. I have extensive linguistic and theoretical expertise in the exegesis of biblical texts, in particular prophetic texts. I studied Biblical Hebrew for many years, Akkadian for two years, at the University of Toronto (Canada), and Aramaic. I also have a solid academic background in the history of ancient Israel and the Ancient Near East, combined with an extensive teaching record on the history of the world's religions and Greek and Jewish Literature. Among the learning objectives of my classes are the following: Providing students with an understanding of the key subjects and issues in history or religion. Analyze and discuss significant historical and religious subjects and issues as they relate to the modern world. Students usually come from a wide variety of social backgrounds and have a range of knowledge and skillsets, depending on their prior academic experience. To provide context and discussing particular subjects, I structure tasks in my course to meet students' different growth areas without assuming too much about their knowledge level. To scaffold assignments is an effective way to bring students up to speed who may need assistance acquiring background information and familiarize themselves with methods. I'm a recent grad from Wesleyan University, where I've worked as a tutor, a teaching assistant, and a researcher. I've taught middle-schoolers how to program their own video games, interviewed monks in Minnesota, studied Dante under a world-class expert in Bologna, and edited transcripts on the history of philosophy since 300 BCE. I recently started teaching through Varsity Tutors, and before starting here I have had extensive teaching experience both in and out of the classroom. I am currently a third year PhD student at The Ohio State University for physical chemistry. I recently completed my undergraduate education with bachelor's degrees in music and chemistry. I am originally from Boston, Massachusetts. I am an incoming third year at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), pursuing a double major in Political Science and International Development Studies. I am a post-baccalaureate student at the University of Pennsylvania. Because I see myself primarily as a philologist, I am studying in order to enter a Ph.D program. I believe that language is one of the primary factors in shaping how we, as individuals, think and present our ideas to the world. I am also a proponent of teaching Classical languages such as Latin and Ancient Greek to students in high school because these languages require the development of analytic capabilities which are sometimes lacking in other more memory-oriented subjects. Furthermore, my education in the Classics does not only focus on linguistics but also on history, mythology, and culture. I studied abroad in Rome for five months in the Spring semester of 2011 through the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies. During my time in Rome, I learned Italian, got to see landmarks of antiquity such as the Roman Forum, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Syracuse, Baiae, and see Medieval Italy through the artworks of Michelangelo and Bernini. Consequentially, I have a strong grasp of historical occurrences in Europe from antiquity to contemporary society. As a tutor, I intend to give a holistic and comprehensive approach to learning new subjects.
