How can a tutor help your child master the SSAT?

Students often feel privileged with the prospects of attending a private middle or high school. The challenge of taking the Secondary School Admissions Test, or SSAT, however, may invoke less positive feelings. A lot of time can go into preparing for the exam. On top of that, there are three different levels - the lower, middle, and upper tests - depending on what grade your child is in. The SSAT is administered to those in grades 3-11. Sure, there are prep classes and study aids. An SSAT tutor in Sterling Heights, MI, however, can offer your student a more individualized, engaging, and structured learning experience.

The tutor can include the same practice tests and study materials, among other tools, for assessing your child's abilities and preparing them for the SSAT. Each session can target areas of confusion, including quantitative math skills, reading comprehension, vocabulary and analogies, and essay writing. If your child is familiar with topics, the tutor doesn't have to spend much time on these, but they will focus on as many trouble areas as needed. It's also possible to track your student's progress and adapt the study plan accordingly.

The student and I finished off the final section of material review (word problems.) We then circled all the way back to the beginning, and brushed up on reading comprehension strategy. She worked hard and thought critically as usual; I am very pleased with her progress.

We reviewed 30 vocab words and learned 35 new ones. We did 2 pages of analogies and she has improved greatly in both areas. We then practiced reading comprehension and went over inferences and main idea strategies.

SSAT Tutoring review by Kimberly in Sterling Heights, MI
The student and I began this session with going over his homework. The homework I assigned was a continuation from the assignments he did not completely finish last week, so it was very important that we went over these things and continue to move forward. Once we went over his homework we worked on exponent rules in math, reviewed a verbal practice test, and briefly continued our discussion about vocabulary and analogies.

SSAT Tutoring review by John in Sterling Heights, MI
The student and I spent time focusing on the mathematics portion of the SSAT. We studied the concepts of absolute value and we also did some work and rate word problems. I want him to do some practice tests in the mathematics area on the website for Monday. His attitude seemed positive. I left him with some strategies on how to solve these problems. We will meet again to continue math work.

SSAT Tutoring review by Thomas in Sterling Heights, MI
Today was our last session before the student takes the final SSAT of the year so we reviewed the material with a particular emphasis on the math problems that he tends to struggle with. He has definitely improved dramatically in recent weeks.

SSAT Tutoring review by Bernadette in Sterling Heights, MI
Today was my first session with the student. We started the session with math. He did very well but he reads very fast. When we did word problems, he read the problems very fast and missed some necessary information. We will work on word problems. He and I also worked on his writing. His use of transitions is excellent. He wrote a paragraph on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to a two year old. He did well but had to change some of his vocabulary. We also worked on reading. For reading practice, we used the online practice questions for the exam. For reading, he was able to answer the questions correctly 10/12 attempts. We also worked on vocabulary. He was able to answer 15/20 questions correctly. He did well with vocabulary and is able to use context clues to find the meaning of the word. For the next session, we will work on his reading skills.
