I am able to determine what obstacles are preventing a student from grasping a concept, and create different means of overcoming those obstacles. Creating a partnership with the student and understanding what he or she needs to overcome is what makes me a great tutor.

I am a 2014 graduate of Cornell University's College of Engineering where I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Biological Engineering. I have just begun my Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Drexel University. My favorite subjects to tutor include Test Prep and elementary/middle school subjects. I enjoy helping younger students so that they can be excited about learning and begin their education with a solid foundation in reading, writing, and mathematics. I believe it is important to provide students with the proper tools to succeed at a young age so that they continue to have a desire to learn for the rest of their lives. I loved my college experience and want to show high school students that with practice and diligence, they too can perform well on standardized tests and go on to the university of their choosing. To accomplish academic goals at any level, it is important for the student to have fun while learning! I personalize my teaching approach to fit the student's learning style so that he or she can easily transition from learning a concept to applying it to a given problem. The greatest reward is seeing the smile on a student's face when a topic "clicks".

I am friendly, communicate well, and capable of adapting my teaching style to meet every student's needs. As a student and as a tutor, I understand the difficulties both face and look to build my tutoring style around my tutee. As a young tutor, I can also relate well to students. Having taken many of the same courses and exams only a few years ago, I understand what it takes to succeed and am willing to go the extra mile to make sure my students enjoy the same success. Frequently Asked Questions
Procedural understanding means knowing the steps to solve a problem (like the algorithm for long division), while conceptual understanding means knowing why those steps work. A student who only knows procedures might memorize that you "bring down the next number," but they might not understand place value or why division works the way it does.
When students develop conceptual understanding, they can solve new types of problems and catch their own mistakes because they understand the underlying logic. This is where real math confidence comes from. Tutors help students build both—showing the steps while also exploring why those steps make sense.
Instead of pure flashcard drills, encourage your child to explore patterns and relationships. For example, when learning multiplication, ask "Why is 3 × 4 the same as 4 × 3?" or "How does 6 × 5 relate to 5 × 5?" This helps them see multiplication as groups and builds deeper recall.
A tutor can guide this discovery process and help your child make connections across topics—showing how multiplication relates to division, how fractions connect to division, and how these concepts build on each other. When math feels like a connected web rather than isolated facts, understanding sticks better and retrieval becomes faster.
Word problems require students to translate language into mathematical thinking—they need to identify what information matters, decide which operation to use, and execute the calculation. Many students can solve 24 ÷ 3 easily, but freeze when asked, "If 24 cookies are divided equally among 3 friends, how many does each get?"
The gap often isn't about math skills—it's about reading comprehension, visualization, and strategy. Tutors help students develop a problem-solving approach: reading carefully, identifying what's being asked, deciding what math to use, and checking if the answer makes sense. With practice and confidence-building, word problems shift from scary to solvable.
Showing work isn't just busy work—it's how teachers see your child's thinking. A student might get the right answer by accident or by using a strategy that won't scale to harder problems. When they show their work, teachers and tutors can identify whether the student truly understands or just got lucky.
Showing work also helps your child catch their own mistakes and builds thinking skills they'll need in algebra and beyond. When working with a tutor, this is especially valuable: it reveals exactly where confusion starts so the tutor can address the real issue, not just fix the answer.
The best elementary math tutors do three things well: they explain concepts clearly using multiple strategies (since different kids understand differently), they ask questions to guide students to answers rather than just telling them, and they build confidence alongside skills. They also understand that elementary math is foundational—gaps here create problems in middle school algebra.
Look for tutors who can adapt to your child's learning style, who are patient with frustration, and who help students see that mistakes are learning opportunities, not failures. A great tutor makes math feel less like memorization and more like problem-solving.
Math anxiety is real and common—many kids worry they're "not a math person" long before they actually struggle with the concepts. Tutoring can directly address this by building genuine confidence through success on progressively harder problems, in a low-pressure environment where mistakes are safe and expected.
When students work 1-on-1 and see themselves understanding concepts they thought were impossible, their whole relationship with math shifts. They start seeing themselves as capable rather than stuck. This mindset change is often as important as the skills they learn—and it typically leads to better outcomes on assessments naturally.
Different textbooks and schools teach math differently—some emphasize mental math and estimation first, others use manipulatives and visual models, and some blend multiple approaches. What matters is that your child understands the concept, not that they use one specific method.
Tutors are flexible: they can work with whatever your child's school uses while also showing alternative strategies if they help your child understand better. This flexibility actually strengthens understanding—when students see the same concept represented multiple ways (as a picture, a number line, an equation, and a real-world scenario), they grasp it more deeply and retain it longer.
