Session Summaries by College Essays Tutors

In our first session the student and I brainstormed ideas for his common app essay for college applications. We went over the common app prompt options and discussed potential topics for each one. My main advice here was to pick something he felt really confident about--don't force an essay to meet the prompt if it isn't something you feel really represents you well or if you're unsure of it. In today's session I read the first draft of the essay he wrote. It was very well written--it told a story with very vivid imagery and well-articulated details. It's just a little too long. So I showed him how to cut down the story to emphasize that vivid imagery and well-articulated details (use maybe one or two per paragraph, so that they really stand out) in order to make room to show us who he is now--instead of telling the reader how the event changed you, show us you as a changed person. That way we can picture you as a new person, rather than as an amalgam of vague concepts like "open-minded" and "adventurous." What does that look like? How do you apply it in your life? Otherwise, it's a strong start! I'm excited to read the next draft.

In this first session with this student, we discussed options for college essays particularly personal statement essays and others with prompts given to college applicants by college admissions offices. He worked on one this session which was the personal statement. He began by brainstorming ideas such as personal information about himself like GPA, extracurricular activities, leadership and employment experience while a student. Once having done this, he then took his ideas and began his essay in standard format with my guidance and assistance. He wrote very well and with my assistance his end result was great. I helped him with idea formation and editing and revision of his essay. For example, one general rule I gave him when writing college level essays is to keep slang terminology and abbreviations to a minimum. I told the student to always spell out words completely and to always be as clear and concise as possible.

The student and I continued our work on writing paragraphs with a solid topic sentence, with a focus on using precise and concise language. I brought in a stanza from J. Cole, one of the student's favorite rappers. I asked him to find the "topic sentence" of the lyrics and the supporting points, then asked him to "translate" 5-10 lines of the song into his own words. We then worked together to come up with an interesting and strong topic sentence for a paragraph, as he really struggles with writing very vague sentences. I asked him to refocus his topic three times until it was as concise as possible. When he finally got to writing, he was very focused and wrote very carefully. What he produced was significantly clearer, more focused, and more specific than any of the essays he's shown me so far in our time together. I'm very excited to see how our next session will go!

We talked about reframing his extracurricular essay in terms of the creative fulfillment he gets from writing and drawing. We also talked about his common app essay on getting lost. We talked about how getting lost in Japan gave him an opportunity to see shrines he never would have otherwise; how when he feels lost around people he can gain new friends with new perspectives who might open doors; how he gets lost in his own mind when he writes and draws, but that lets him express new and unusual ideas; how he felt lost when he was younger because he was multicultural/racial and didn't feel like he fit in with any of the self-segregated communities, but that he's since realized that he belongs to all of them, which gives him a unique perspective on the world.
