Session Summaries by Anatomy Tutors

Marysville, WA Anatomy tutoring
The student and I covered a practice quiz that his professor had assigned in his Virology lab course. The first part of the quiz was relatively simple, just calculating initial viral titer load and if the calculated value was accurate to the reported value on the label. We reviewed the best way to solve for burst size without knowing the concentration of host cells or being given a one step growth curve with values for latent period and eclipse period.

The student has an exam tomorrow in biology, so we address the things that she had questions and concerns about. We covered the central dogma, where DNA makes RNA makes protein, as well as an overview of the processes of replication, transcription, and translation. In addition, we traced the path of a protein from the ribosome to its export from the cell. Along with proteins, we discussed the various linkages seen in carbohydrates, DNA/RNA, and proteins. We discussed the fluid mosaic model of the cell membrane and G-Protein- mediated cell signaling cascades. What she seemed to struggle with the most were functional groups, but this is very understandable since this is more of an organic chemistry/biochemistry topic. We did an overview of the main functional groups and looked at examples of how they can work. Lastly, we did a practice quiz provided by her book. After completing the quiz, we looked at why certain answers were correct and others were wrong. Everything went very smoothly.

We worked on converting [H+] to pH, pOH, and practiced converting between them. The student had a little trouble with the calculations as this is the first time he's had to use his TI calculator to do these type of calculations, but he's now figured it out thanks to knowing what the answer should be.

We worked on free fall and introduced projectile motion using vector analysis. No big struggles today, just some small math errors. His conceptual knowledge is great at this point, so I worked mostly with connecting the specialized equations he's been given to the main equations. Attitude was very good this lesson, he was having a good time and seems genuinely interested in the material. No extra practice was needed. He reports doing well on his last test. No concerns.

We worked on gas law problems, empirical formulas, molecular formulas, electrolytic salts, and molarity. The main focus of the session was on a homework set he had, which encompassed a wide range of topics. The student seems to struggle most with problem-solving techniques (i.e., figuring out which steps he has to take to do what). Once he knows what to do, he's all good. He was confident in the material and concepts covered in the homework. He continues to improve each session. The main focus is mapping out how to solve problems, which, in AP Chemistry, is half the battle.
