I have been teaching and tutoring Mandarin Chinese for over five years. I lived in China and Taiwan off and on between 2002 and 2010. I've participated in study abroad, Internships abroad, service, and teaching while overseas. I received a BA in Mandarin Chinese from Brigham Young University in 2009 and scored superior on a national oral exam (OPI) in Mandarin. Although Chinese can seem intimidating and difficult, it is in many ways much easier to learn than Latin-based languages such as English and Spanish. Chinese is like learning the language of cavemen; it is visual, musical, and established on basic, conjugation-free grammar. I have a passion for helping individuals overcome their language challenges by helping them recognize their own learning styles and catering to their needs. As a student in an Educational Technology Program, I tend to use technology as an aide to learning. I believe that learning should be interesting and enjoyable and that by maintaining motivation in learning, students are better able to retain information and learn more quickly. You will find Chinese to be fascinating and fun and learning it will become a life-long hobby. In my spare time, I enjoy being outside, playing sports, dancing, painting, watching movies, and spending time with my husband and baby boy.

After discussing what your main goal is, I will come up with a curriculum that I feel is best fit for you. My main goal is to make sure that you the learner, are confident and comfortable using your foreign language knowledge to the best of your ability. What you learn will not be limited to basic phrases that come straight from a textbook, but rather useful information that would allow you to complete daily tasks in real life with ease. After delving in to the ancient history of Greece and Rome for my undergrad, receiving a B.A. of Classics from Augustana College in Rock Island Illinois, I traveled to the far East (China) to teach English for 3 years, fell in love, and returned back to the U.S. I'm happily going back to school to study Electrical Engineering, currently working towards an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from Boston University.My wide educational background and teaching experience make me a great tutor. I have tutored Greek and Latin during my undergraduate studies and taught English in China for 3 years to students ranging from pre-school to graduate school. More recently, I have been taking lots of STEM classes for my engineering degree.I tutor a wide range of mathematical subjects (up through Calculus 3 and Differential Equations) as well as ESL and Mandarin Chinese. These experiences range from teaching swimming lessons, volunteering in preschool and elementary school classrooms, working as a summer camp counselor, a volunteer tutor with middle school students, and teaching a historical research course to eighth graders for two academic school years.While I tutor in a variety of areas, I especially love tutoring in writing skills, as I enjoy helping students develop their individual voice and find their strengths in writing. I believe that education is necessary for all children, as it helps inspire a lifetime of learning.
