I have been a high school classroom teacher for a few years, having recently graduated from University of Cincinnati with a bachelors in Secondary Education English Language Arts and a bachelors in Literature and Cultural Studies. When it comes to math, science, and other analytical subjects, I guide students with practice of processes and concepts so that new learning builds easily on established knowledge.When I am not working, I enjoy spending my time with my family. I have two children, who are both creative and have varied interests. We spend time crafting, exploring nature, solving puzzles, and reading. I am also a soccer and baseball fan, and spend time during spring and fall seasons enjoying both with my daughter.

I loved the challenge of working with unmotivated learners, and several of my students told me I was the best teacher they had had. Before that I worked as a freelance reporter for The Nation, and an editor at New York Focus, The South Side Weekly, and various publications in New York and Chicago. I have a Master's in Biology from VCU in which my focus was on population genetics. I have worked with a wide range of students over the course of many years. I began tutoring and teaching in college, where I also taught courses in Biology, and have since worked with students aged 5-12 with a program called Mad Science. I am currently a certified teacher, where I teach gifted children at the high school level. Over the past few years, I have tutored SOL prep in Biology, Math and Chemistry. In addition to my work with Varsity Tutors, I am also teaching Biology at a community college, and am tutoring in an after school program at an elementary school. I graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Human Development and Psychological Services, and am currently working to complete a Master's in Professional Behavior Analysis. I have been working with children with developmental disabilities at an ABA agency in the Washington, DC area for the past few years. My job includes creating measurable milestones to help learners achieve their goals, and determining what teaching methods will be most effective for each individual client. I believe that active student responding, personalized programs, and a focus on measurable goals are all important components of a successful learning experience. I hope to bring these same strategies to the students at Varsity Tutors!
