Hattie
Certified Tutor
I am interested in helping students improve their reading, writing, research and public speaking skills. I work with students from grades 6-12 and undergraduate to graduate students. Other information about me:
Where did you get your education?
I have a B.A. in English from UNC-Pembroke, an M.A. in English/Technical Communication from East Carolina University, an M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from NC State Univ. and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Clemson University.
What is your tutoring experience (or experience working with students)?
I have seventeen years of experience teaching English at the middle school, high school, community college and university levels.
What subjects do you tutor?
I tutor English, Language Arts, Reading, Writing, Research and test-taking skills. My favorite subject to tutor is Reading because it's my first love. I like to see struggling or disinterested students read better and learn more about themselves in the pages of a book or online.
How would you describe your teaching philosophy/your tutoring style?
My teaching philosophy is that all students can learn, grow and improve regardless of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, location, family background or intellectual level. My job is to figure out how best to achieve this learning.
What interests you outside of academia? Oftentimes, clients choose a tutor because they share a similar hobby.
As a full-time high school teacher, my free time is limited. When I do have time off from work I like to write poetry and academic articles, read, watch TV, take road trips and spend time with my 5-year old nephew and 3-year old niece.
