I have recently had the chance to volunteer as an interpreter at a non private organization that deals with low income families. My responsibilities were to bridge the language gap between the Audiologist and the parents. As a result, I got to interact with the children many times between sessions or afterwards. The kids reminded me of me when I was kid.

Growing up with immigrant parents has its issues. Especially when it comes to education. My parents did the best they could to teach me what they knew, but it was limited and in a different language. When it was time for me to attend school I was at a great disadvantage then the other kids. English was not my first language despite being born and raised in Houston, TX. I had a difficult time going to school all the way up to High School. Nobody took the time to sit with me and try and figure out what was the actual problem. It wasnt till I got to college that I had taken it upon myself to learn to study and to teach myself, so that I could progress in my education.

There I am at this non profit organization with these kids just like me. Going through some of the same things I did. Made me realize if there was only somebody who understood me and would be willing to take the time to help me when I was kid. Maybe things would have been different. I want to be that one person that is willing to take the time to help these kids, so that maybe they wont have to struggle as much.
