I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

Hi! I am a graduate student in the Philadelphia region. My undergraduate degrees are in French and Theatre, with a minor in Linguistics. I specialize in tutoring in French, English reading, writing and comprehension, and ACT reading and writing prep. (When I took the ACT I got a composite 30 score-- a 34 on reading, and a 33 on writing!) When I'm not in school or working as an actor, I am petting cats, reading books, and occasionally going outside.

When contacting directly, text is always best! I look forward to meeting you!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

We will spend a small amount of time getting to know each other. Then, we will talk about the subject the student wishes to work on and where they think they typically struggle. We will look at recent assignments, tests, etc. If the student has a specific homework assignment, we will work through that.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By laying strong foundations in any given subject, and working on critical thinking skills, any student can become an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By pointing out real-life progress and micro-successes, as well as having a positive and helpful attitude.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

We'll come at it from a different angle, re-visit, or take it slow! There will be no frustration from me!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

We go back to basics--the point of view, the subject of the writing, the verbs (what are they doing?), and nouns (what sort of things are in this writing? why?).
