Certified Tutor
My name is Jacqueline! I got my B.S in psychology from College of Charleston in May of 2016. I work full time as a lead at an applied behavior analysis company here in Charleston. I have been working with children with autism the past five years, and have become proficient in being able to teach children in different aspects of their lives, including academics. My teaching philosophy is all about reinforcement because I believe that helps the child stay motivated and creates a positive learning environment.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that every child has the ability to learn; it is up for the tutor or teacher to find the best way to teach the child! I am also a strong believer in reinforcement, which will help push the child to want to do better.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
My first session would involve getting to know the child. To learn their strengths and their weakness and the best way to teach them, e.g. through visual learning or more hands-on.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
As an ABA therapist, I believe in prompt fading. So I would start with a full verbal prompt in a sense by helping them through the first problem completely, and then I'd begin to fade little by little so they can independently work on the concept.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Through positive reinforcement. Offering small incentives that the parents would be okay with. So if they do well on 5 tests in a subject they are struggling on, then they get a small prize that would mean something to them.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would try to find different ways that would help teach the concept. If they are not learning one way, then it would be time to try a different way. I would continue going until the child learned the concept.
