I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I have a BS in Biochemistry from Cornell University (with honors and distinction) and a PhD in Biochemistry from The Rockefeller University, although my training also encompasses neuroscience, genetics, and molecular biology. I'm enthusiastic about science, but more importantly, I approach my tutoring sessions with a sense of humor, and I have a creative style to help students better understand otherwise difficult concepts.

I have considerable expertise in the biological sciences, including general biology, genetics, cell biology, developmental biology and molecular biology. I have an extensive and highly successful record of mentoring elementary, middle school, high school, undergraduate and graduate level students (from a career spanning over 25 years). I have taught high school students, undergraduates and graduate courses, as well as medical school coursework.

I am also able to help with writing and proofreading applications, reports and essays in all fields (e.g., history, English) in addition to the biological sciences. In addition, I can help you become a better test taker.

We can meet at a local library or elsewhere, and on-line tutoring is also a possibility. Let me help you increase your knowledge, your confidence, and help you better prepare for exams!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My goal is to increase the student's confidence and understanding, and I try to do that with humor and enthusiasm for the subject.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I want to know what the student hopes to gain from the session(s) and how best I can help them with their goals.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

It is not about rote memorization; it's about understanding - and applying - the concepts.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated in two ways: by making the sessions successful, to help them gain confidence, and to guide them in the final goal. Sometimes you just have to get through a course to get to the next step in what you really hope to do.
