What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student while evaluating through observations and conversation. After, I would take a look at previous work to conclude my evaluations.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By beginning with a process of intensive learning and slowly transitioning the student into an independent learner. The more I work with the student, the more I can determine whether or not they are ready to be independent.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Continuously changing strategies until I find one that fits their learning abilities. Every child has their right strategy.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Repetition. The best way to learn how to learn comprehension is practice. Additionally, the use of visuals, if available, is always a great way to additionally help.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Getting to know them. Once you understand them, then you can begin to know how they can and want to learn.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

By finding new and innovative ways to show them that what they are struggling with can be overcome.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy is to use multiple intelligences to find the student's best way to learn and base my tutoring around that information.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

First of all is observation as an informal assessment. Seeing if, through conversation, they can show an understanding. Additionally, using a formal assessment such as a short exam would help me check for understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By constant positive praise and using as few negative words when providing feedback as possible.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Depends on the subject I am teaching. There are a number of websites and resources through the internet I have found very useful for students to work on.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By observing them and conversing with them while checking the work assigned to them weekly that allows me to see their progress.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

By discovering the best way they learn and the ways they find it most difficult to learn. From there I design strategies that best suit their style.
