What is your teaching philosophy?
I love to gear lessons specifically to each student and what they need. No one student learns the same as another.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I will assess their level while incorporating items they like to cover in the subject area.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Teach them the skills they need, and their confidence will boost.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Try a different approach to teaching the concept.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Find something to read that they pick out or that interests them.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Quick assessments and giving them control of their learning.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Find a part they like about the subject and start there.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Practice tests, games I create, just casual conversation with questions mixed in, and writing.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Highlight their progress and when they get things correct.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Depends on the student- if they need to pass a test, then practice tests to see the areas of struggle. If it is reading, read together and see the areas that need improvement.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
What they want to learn and are willing to do is key. See what realistic goals are, and then set up a plan.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Pen, pencil, paper, books, printouts, textbooks, etc.
