What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe all students need specialized educational experiences to help with the development of their potential. I believe with the right tools and with a good team, everyone can work up their abilities. Unique learners require unique learning experiences. To me, all students are unique! My personal beliefs focus on the individual highlights and the fact that there are differences among all learners, creating a need for specialized educational experiences to help them be successful.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will first build connections by understanding areas of need, in addition to assuring the student that he or she is in a safe interaction where we will explore how they can learn best.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

We can help students become independent by modeling and giving tools so that they can transfer information successfully.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

To help students stay engaged and motivated, we must know about the student's learning styles to provide activities that are meaningful.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When teaching a difficult concept, I like to think outside the box. I will explore options to re-teaching or supporting the concepts, such as flashcards, interactive games, videos, songs or simple traditional paper and pencil practices.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

To help students with reading comprehension, we need to first get familiar with the student's learning style. After identifying learning style, I will use strategies that will help the student. Examples: For auditory learners, reading becomes boring. Try reading out loud or books on tapes, or recording the reading and re-listening. For students with vocabulary weakness, looking for context clues or making stories to identify words.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Some strategies used: flashcards, drawing connections with specific events, and paraphrasing.
