What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I would want to get to know a little about my student. I want to incorporate their hobbies and interests into my lessons.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students become independent learners when they feel more confident in themselves. We would work on building routines to help build their confidence and help their study habits.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would like to keep my lessons interesting by changing how we are learning. I do not want to give my students a laundry list of problems to solve, but a more interactive lesson.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would try to relate the concept to their prior knowledge. For example, a student struggles with solving two-step equations. I would bring the student back to one-step equations and try to build from there.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The most successful lessons are exploratory. The tutor guides the student through the lesson, while the student completes the problem solving.
