I am a 26 year graduate student at San Jose State University. I am getting a Masters in Public Administration and in the future want to eventually work in local or state government. I graduated from the University of California Davis with a bachelors degree in International Relations and Education. I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA and I currently live with my husband in San Jose but will be in San Francisco this summer. I have been with Varsity Tutors for about 2 years and I have tutored many middle school students in algebra, geometry, and SSAT prep. My first job was at a summer school program when I was sixteen years old. I was a teachers assistant for a 6th grade math class and that is where I learned that I loved teaching and tutoring. Throughout high school and college, I continued teaching by working in the classroom and also as a swim instructor at the local pool. While in college, I also worked as a tutor for a local high school where I specialized in Algebra 1, Algebra 2, CAHSEE math, and English. I also have some teaching experience from working with another summer program as a 5th grade math instructor. In this program, I created my own lesson plans and taught about 80 total students. After graduating from UC Davis, I moved back to San Francisco and began working as an AmeriCorps member at a high school in Oakland. After that, I decided to do a second year with Americorps in San Francisco. I worked in two elementary schools where I helped establish and run a mentoring program for students of all grades. In these past nine years, I have gone from helping kids understand PEMDAS, teaching backstroke, passing the CAHSEE, and even how to write a resume. Overall, I have worked with kids in and out of the classroom and I continue doing it because I love seeing students succeed in everything that they do.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that I love to have fun while I tutor, because no one ever learns anything from a boring lesson. I try to incorporate aspects of the student's life into our sessions. For example, if a student is an athlete, then I use their favorite sport or athlete to make analogies or examples about the lesson. This is a fun, simple way to keep students engaged longer without getting bored.
