What is your teaching philosophy?

Student centered and objective motivated. To set goals with the student and work together to make it happen. Also, it is important to let learning be fun!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Set goals and gauge what level the student's current understanding of the topic is at.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Planning with the student what they will accomplish before the next time we meet. Also, provide messages of encouragement throughout the week.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Share stories about the topic to show them the importance and impact it can have. Remind them of why they wanted to learn in the first place!

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Use examples of real life situations, because often times it takes a little more than just the textbook! I would also have us do repetition exercises.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Read out loud, this helps in multiple ways. Like pronunciation and getting used to hearing the foreign language.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

To get to know them! Understand how they prefer to learn, and why they are seeking help. I can then adapt to their needs.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Show them the real life applications! I would also share stories from my experience, because I am sure if they are struggling I may have overcome something similar!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have them explain it back to me. If they can confidently answer, then I can know that they understand as well.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Starting off with simple problems and building up. It makes no sense to go in reverse! Also, by encouraging them throughout the learning process. I strive to show each student the areas that they are improving in.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Every so often have a review session that covers many topics. That way we can see what we need to review and cover that again before moving forward. Also, gearing the learning towards their goals.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Find out if they are a visual, audio, or tactile learner. Try lots of different techniques and see if repetition or conversation helps them more.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The materials the student owns. Also, I find practice exercises fitting the student’s needs that we can use if need be.
