Lisa
Certified Tutor
My specialized skill set includes evaluating collegiate admission essays to ensure they are comprehensive and individualized. Additionally, I serve as an assessor of academic progress for school at home/ homeschool students. Helping students excel with essay development, composition and review are also areas I have exemplary capability in. I will also work alongside student teachers in evaluating personalized educational belief statements.
I believe all students have the capacity to learn. Learning styles and abilities do vary . Students should never feel shame or judgement about their academic aptitude. An exemplary tutor possesses the understanding that all learners need to progress at their own individual pace. I enjoy the specialized attention I am able to give my students in a tutoring setting. We accomplish goals much quicker when lessons can be personalized and interruptions are non existent.
My career spans from the collegiate level as a certified Reading Specialist to experience as an elementary teacher for grades K- 8 . It is personally fulfilling to work with both college level and school age learners. Additionally, I specialize in the unique learning styles of the homeschool community and have been a homeschool educator for several years.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Teaching should be performed in a style that is engaging and accurate with the goal of mastery, not simply obtaining a high test score.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would like some information about what interests that student. I would share some facts about who I am.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I help students become independent learners by gradually demonstrating to them that they are capable of succeeding with their assigned task and slowly decreasing reliance on me.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I try not to overwhelm students, and I find it useful to bring to their attention accomplishments they have achieved.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I slow down the pace of instruction. I try to ascertain what is causing the difficulty and address it.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I use a variety of techniques that are proven to increase student comprehension.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
It is important to establish a good and trusting rapport with a new student. I then ascertain what their interest and ability levels are.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I will use high interest materials.
