Certified Tutor

I am a professional math tutor and am currently the Lead Math Tutor at San Jacinto Community College. I tutor all levels starting from Middle School up to higher level college Math (Cal III). I really enjoy helping students become successful in this area of study! I have approximately 5 years of prior experience which helps me when assisting students with Math. I know how to break problems down by using short cuts and other "math tricks' that will help most students understand the material at hand. My youth gives me the biggest advantage because I can relate with students in high school and college levels very well. I take pride in helping all students in Math and really enjoy seeing them succeed in the subject that is most known as toughest course they will ever have to take in their educational career. My fail-to-pass ratio is steadily increasing with present clients & I plan to keep it going for years to come! Please feel free to ask me any questions & I will be happy to give you the best advice & assistance possible.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Studying for Math requires much repetition. Much like going to the gym. You work out at the gym to become stronger. So the only way to improve your Mathematics is by repeatedly doing reps of problem sets and studying review sheets.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First we would go over problem sets/homework and any questions that they may have in their notes.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By encouraging the student to use their textbook and notes when doing problem sets. This may assist them in answering questions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By being encouraging and reassuring that I am there to help.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Find other, different ways to explain the concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

By underlining key terms in the question or sentence.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Encouraging them to go over homework and review sheets.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

When they start to understand the material, that usually boosts their confidence to learn independently.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking them questions.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I ask questions to help me gather a general idea of what they are struggling on.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Lots of scratch paper and an ink pen.
