Jennifer

Certified Tutor

As a lifelong learner, I am driven to help others achieve their academic goals. I am currently a part-time instructor for math, science, and computers. In addition to having a Masters degree I have over 10 years of business experience. This has allowed me to help translate to students how they can use the information they are learning at school in the real world. I have worked with students of all ages and truly love helping students master the basics of their subjects so that they can succeed in their classes.

I am most passionate about tutoring math and helping students understand how to break down problems. I work to evaluate their current comprehension and strive to build a strong foundation of knowledge. I often tell my students that math is just like learning another language. Once they learn to master the basics they are able to read and solve problems successfully. I care deeply about my students' success and I strive to make learning fun and relatable to their world.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

The first few minutes will be spent getting to know each other. I will ask the student what their goals are for tutoring and make sure we are aligned. I will then work to understand the student’s knowledge and understanding of the subject. We will then work together to determine the plan of action.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

First I would look at the order of learning for the student because the order of these activities affects the way a student processes and retains information. I would first focus on working with simple concepts that have not yet been mastered and then move to the complex, knowing that I will adapt sessions to the experience of students. The end goal is get the student to understand the information instead of me telling them what to do. Practically this is done through me walking through a problem, explaining each step. Then I have the student work on a similar problem, assisting them where needed. Lastly I have the student work on a similar problem and explain to me each step.

What is your teaching philosophy?

First and foremost my philosophy is that every student is capable of learning, each in his or her own unique way. In my experience, the biggest obstacle to learning is a student’s belief about the subject. For example students may believe that math is unessential, unbearable, and uninteresting. I work to show them that math is essential and will always have a practical application in their life. I show them that math, while not always easy, is possible. I tutor math with excitement and enthusiasm to engage them in their work.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

When tutoring math I break down a problem into smaller steps. I then walk through each step one by one to identify the lack of understanding and determine whether or not I need to review a concept or take a new approach. As we walk through the problem I may also have the student take notes at the steps that they are not confident with yet. This will help them as they work on their work at home.
