Certified Tutor

I received my teaching degree from UNC Charlotte and I am currently in my 11th year of teaching. For five of those years, I taught in a middle school setting for students with special needs. I am licensed for K-12 special education. About 6 years ago I transitioned to the private teaching sector and assist students of varying ages and ability levels. I chose to become an educator because I enjoy seeing students succeed and watching them grow to be independent learners.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that not every student is able to learn the same way. It is my responsibility, as a teacher, to foster the individual needs and learning styles of all of my students. I also believe it is very crucial and beneficial for students to be able to express themselves through learning. This can be done through the inclusion of real life examples that students are able to relate to.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would begin by discussing the ultimate goals and determine highest areas of concern for the student. This may also lead to a general discussion of interests in order to build a rapport.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Students become more independent when they are invested in their learning experience. Adding real life examples allow for independent practice.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Complete activities and discussion that assist with building a rapport with the student. Including preferential activities within the session can assist with motivation as well.
