Certified Tutor

I am a tutor because I believe that education provides the best opportunity for people to be happier and more productive individuals. I want to help people be happy!

All of us can learn all things, but people learn at different paces and with different methods, so many students are left behind in the school system. That is why working with a tutor can be a person's best opportunity for success. I am a trained teacher who will help students succeed!

I am certified to teach English, Spanish, Japanese, and Political Science in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Louisiana. I have a Master's Degree in English from Mount Mary University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and thirty Master's credits in Spanish from the University of California - Santa Barbara. I have spent a year in Japan and a year and a half in Guatemala. I have had poetry and short stories (fiction and nonfiction) published in several online magazines.

Besides reading, writing, and studying foreign languages, I enjoy kayaking, biking, yoga, and dance. You can also find me at ethnic restaurants and bistros all over the Milwaukee area or in a local theater or cinema enjoying a show.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that students learn best when their personalities and learning styles are respected and lessons are catered to their needs. I believe all students can learn though their pace, and ways of learning might be unique. It is up to the teacher to inspire them and tailor lessons to their needs.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

There are many strategies that can help a student who is struggling with reading comprehension, such as previewing reading selections, activating previous knowledge, building background knowledge, building vocabulary, underlining main points, summarizing, re-reading, and general engagement . . . to name a few.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

When a student is struggling in a particular area, it is important to connect the content to real-work applications and explore how the content will help the student reach goals for her own future. It is also imperative to focus on success and create successes for the student as she progresses. We are all more interested in things at which we can excel.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

A student will feel more confident in an area when the student has the opportunity to perform at a comfortable level while taking manageable risks that promote progress and success. It is also imperative to point out to the student where she is succeeding and focus on and verbalize successes and progress.
