Certified Tutor

As a student at the University of Oklahoma, I studied Math, Finance/Accounting, and Botany. Although I have many subjects I can tutor in, Math is my absolute favorite! My passion for teaching started in high school, when tutoring my classmates became a part of my daily life. From English and History to the upper-level math courses I took at Rose State during my senior year, I have always been a resource for understanding and comprehending materials by connecting with my clients and tailoring study techniques to each individual. Whether it's finding tips and tricks to make homework easier, or structuring an entire studying regimen to promote success in the future, I can ignite the fire for learning in any student.

I volunteered as part of my school district's gifted student program, and I taught and competed in academic competitions such as quiz bowl! During my senior year, I also had the amazing opportunity to be a teaching assistant for a Special Education math teacher. Although the process of learning and retaining knowledge presents a unique challenge to these wonderful students, the joy of education is universal, and much more rewarding with the hard work it takes to make everything 'click'! When I am not working with students, you could find me: in the kitchen, cooking foods from around the world (with names I can hardly pronounce); in front of the computer, playing video games and listening to music; or outside, hiking/gardening/swimming/reading on a hammock (weather permitting!) I love learning new languages and studying new subjects.

I am currently the Technical Program Manager for the Business Intelligence team at my company, which includes developing applications, training 1000+ users, and constantly expanding my own knowledge. While this takes up a good chunk of my schedule, I love to take time to translate my new skills into more effective teaching methods.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe there are many paths to learning. Each student understands differently, and I see it as the teacher's job to help every student find the way to education that is fun, effective, and fulfilling!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I see the first session as an opportunity to gauge a student's educational background, to identify weak points in the foundational understanding of a subject, and to really get to know the student (not to forget getting the homework done)!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Independent learning takes a balance between motivation and fun. I help students reach this balance by encouraging learning as a passive practice! By removing roadblocks such as testing anxiety, weak educational foundations, and boredom, students discover that learning doesn't have to be a struggle, but a constant adventure.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I am a firm believer in setting "SMART" goals. By setting goals that are Simple, Measureable, Attainable, Reasonable, and Timely, students constantly get the satisfaction of completion without getting buried under the idea that learning is too much work or getting complacent!
