My passion for working with students comes from being able to listen, learn and help others grow during the experience. My experience in tutoring centers around 1 year spent as an ESL Tutor and 2 years spent as a Writing Tutor/College Consultant. Further education experience comes from time spent working at an Education non-profit and in College Admissions.

I specialize in helping high school aged students prepare for college. Whether that is through the skills needed to navigate college admissions, test prep and improving competencies in the humanities and social sciences. I graduated from Grinnell College with a degree in Political Science, speak Spanish (Fluent), Vietnamese (Intermediate) and Mandarin Chinese (Intermediate) and am happy to work with students from around the Omaha Metropolitan Area.

What is your teaching philosophy?

To listen to parents and students, understand their perspective and assess what a student needs. The benefit of one on one tutoring is to allow an educator to provide individualized instruction. It is my goal to provide this type of instruction instead of trying a one size-fits-all approach.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Have an open, friendly discussion with the student and their parents, in the process developing an understanding for how I can help. Afterwards, I would try to work through with the student some practice questions or assessments to understand their strengths and weaknesses.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

There are two ways I believe you can help a student effectively achieve this: 1) First, get to know that student and understand what motivates them. Then be a voice of support that helps them work towards those goals 2) Second, gear tutoring sessions so they are more skills and ideas based than content based, providing assignments that encourage the student to learn the content on their own by taking advantage of the learning tools the online platform offers, and other resources as well. This way, our sessions will have more meaning, instead of focusing on straight forward content, we can focused on whether writing or analytical skills have improved and whether a student is closer to the readiness needed for a standardized exam.
