I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Linda

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Rutgers University with a B.A. in Cell Biology & Neuroscience. I specialize in test prep, specifically the SAT and GRE. I love helping students achieve their targeted scores in order to get into their dream schools. I tailor my tutoring to each individual student, addressing their personal strengths/weaknesses. I approach tutoring as a team effort as we work together to achieve success. My teaching philosophy is that every student has the potential to succeed, and the key to achieving your goal is a matter of hard work and dedication rather than intelligence. I work with all students of varying levels. For those that do not do well under the pressure of standardized tests, I strive to make test-taking less anxiety-inducing and more approachable for my students. For students looking to gain an extra boost in their scores, I assess what information they already know and focus on more problematic areas. I love my students and I love what we can accomplish together as a team.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe every student has the potential to succeed. It is not a matter of intelligence, but a matter of effort. By putting in the hard work, we as a team (student and tutor) can achieve the results we want.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

For test prep, I will always perform a diagnostic test to identify areas of weakness or strength. I'll go over the test results with the student and make a general plan of what we are going to work on in each session until the test date.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I try my best to have students answer questions to the best of their ability before stepping in and showing them the correct method. Once I teach them a strategy, I will give them problem sets to solidify that pattern of thinking before moving on.
