Your learning is my fulfillment! I will provide you with all the tools necessary for such learning, and therefore, academic success.

I have knowledge and experience from many corners of the world that are waiting to be shared. I graduated from the University of California Berkeley with majors in chemistry and South and Southeast Asian studies. Since finishing my undergraduate, I have lectured Southeast Asian literature at a university for two semesters, as well as tutored high school students in SAT and ACT test preparation for two years. As such, I am more than capable of teaching any and all sections of the SAT or ACT and any related academic subjects (math until precalculus, English grammar, composition and writing).

My favorite subject to tutor is chemistry! It allows me to explain how a lot of things work, and I enjoy relating the behavior of atoms and molecules to the characteristics of everyday things. Science is best when its concepts are understood and observed beyond the classroom.

My style of teaching is participatory and inquiry-based; I will ask a lot of questions to facilitate critical thinking and active learning. This also allows the individual to arrive at the answer using his/her own methods. A thorough grasp of the fundamentals of a subject is essential, and we will fill in any gaps in knowledge together.

I wish to pursue graduate degrees in multicultural education to transform pedagogy and curricula, especially around topics of history, language, and identity. At the same time, I also love all things scientific and nerdy. Foreign films, travel, personal narratives, role-playing games, tropical beaches, hiking, and yoga are some of my interests.

My pursuit of knowledge is to deepen my understanding of natural and social phenomena, which I believe allows me to be a more compassionate individual. I look forward to being of service to the world as a teacher, one student at a time.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is Freirean. It revolves around an egalitarian relationship between teacher and student. The learning process goes both ways: I learn from you as you learn from me.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I want to know you, as a student and as a person. A typical first session would involve assessment--evaluating your learning styles and problem-solving techniques. I also like to ask students about their goals. I believe that keeping sight of the big picture is always a good thing. Why do we study in the first place?

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Independent learning comes from the student's motivation. How does a student gain motivation? As a teacher, I try to make learning as fun and as relatable as possible so the student is engaged. A simple perspective shift from "I need to study this so I can pass my exam" to "I will study this so I can be a more educated individual who can be of service to others" can also help. In the end, it is up to the student. I strive to lead by example.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I am patient and will always be accommodating to a student's needs. Positive reinforcement is one of my strengths! I am a passionate teacher who guides but does not spoon-feed.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I usually have another way of explaining the same concept. If you're a visual learner, I will draw a diagram to illustrate an idea. If you like analogies, I can help you connect the dots between similar ideas. Overall, I will ensure that the fundamental knowledge necessary for grasping more arcane concepts is first well-established.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Patience is key. But rereading a passage over and over isn't efficient. I can help a student understand the passage as a whole through context clues and key words. Then we can dissect the reading piece by piece. It's easier to understand something that's divided into smaller sections.
