I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am highly effective in creating relationships, and in providing personal and responsive services through understanding, trust, knowledge, and enthusiasm. I am also cognizant of cultural differences, and achieved a unique perspective based on living and working in Latin America. I am recognized as an organized, focused and persistent leader with excellent communication skills, and am fluent in English and Spanish, both oral and written.

I love sports (I was once a boxing commentator in Venezuela), and movies; Christopher Nolan, Ridley Scott and Matthew Vaughn are my favorite film directors, and I have seen all of their films. I always try to provide objective film reviews so you don't spend your hard-earned dollars on movies not worth your time and money.

When not tutoring or watching movies and sports, I also love swimming, which is great for the body and soul.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Motivate everyone, try to identify with student on what areas of life he might be interested in. (Sports, movies, politics, etc.)

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get him interested in Spanish. The more knowledge you have of languages, the more prepared you are to succeed in life.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Explore what areas he/she is interested in and emphasize that knowledge of other languages and subjects will always give him/her an edge.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Explore what abilities he/she might have and make him/her understand that those abilities are there for a reason.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If there is skill hard to learn, I would find examples of situations where that skill or concept has to be applied.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Have him watch Spanish-speaking documentaries. The Spanish used on those formats is properly used.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Exploring subjects the student might like.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Creating a real scenario can help a student get excited/engaged in the subject.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Visual techniques - i.e. videos and movies.
