Language is power. We all know that the best way to communicate is through verbal and non verbal communication. Humans are understood by gestures or tone of voice and that is how we interpret our state of mind. By this, I will add that we all are receptors of languages constantly and we do get to understand the basics of language in different ways. I personally learned English listening to music and watching TV programs. Language intrigued me so much that I ended up majoring in linguistics and communication in English. My native language is Spanish and took Italian in college as a third language. I am here and more than happy to help you achieve your goals in learning a new language.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I always try to use the student's knowledge to start tutoring or teaching, that way I know how the student can learn in a better and effective way.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to know the level of knowledge he/she has on the subject we are going to start tutoring, so we can start off at the same level.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would assign new material so he/she could practice at home.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

New methods of learning, varying from books to music.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will repeat the subject until they feel comfortable to proceed. When the student feels ready, I will continue with a new subject.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would read the material, so they can hear it and comprehend how to do it. Then, I'll let the student read it for me, without interrupting. If the student still has difficulties, I will go word by word -- using a recorder so he/she can practice it as many times he/she desires.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

First, I would make the student comfortable and not have any kind of stress when trying to communicate their doubts in a specific subject area.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Find something the student might like, for example, music, videos, books, or TV shows. Focus on interests ensures that the learning experience won't be frustrating. Not everyone learns the same way; some people learn by ear and some are more visual.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Assigning language exercises, and giving the student a determined time frame.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Praising them. Being cheerful and happy with their hard work.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Asking them what is their most difficult subject and why? Having them explain to me their weaknesses in a subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Being able to adapt to their schedule and rhythm of learning. I will go at my student's pace.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Language manuals, Internet, music, books, poetry, dictionaries and apps.
