What is your teaching philosophy?
A good education is the key to a successful career and a rewarding life. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to help each student reach his or her potential in their fields of interest. The best method to do this will vary by student, and it is my role to facilitate the process.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Determine what the student's long-term goals are and their goals for this particular session. If information has been provided ahead of time, I would have planned the entire session.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By fostering the student's confidence in his or her own abilities and by relating a personal narrative of my lifelong learning experiences. Nothing works better than the power of example.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By pointing out the relationship between the student's achievements and the attaining of his or her short and long-term goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Try to isolate the specific element that is giving the student the most trouble and work to overcome whatever difficulty exists.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Practice is key here and there are an abundance of materials that can help students in this area.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Identification of basic strengths and weaknesses as well as long- and short-term goals.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Try to define the relationship between the struggle and achievement; also, try to find elements of the subject that can motivate the student.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Socratic-style questions work well, as well as getting the student to construct an outline of the material.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
It depends on the student, but positive reinforcement is the key. As a student masters each element of the material, a brief review or Q and A is also useful.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Diagnostic testing is best for this, especially in the verbal and composition areas. Once the weaknesses are identified, a strategy can be designed to remedy them.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Hard to generalize here, except to say that the key is to suit the approach to the student's personality. What works well with one may not with another. Adaptability is everything.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
It depends on the subject, but I have access to a lot of material that I have used over the years. There are also a great many resources available online.
