Gustavo: Quebec City tutor

Certified Tutor

I have studied in Argentina, in a bilingual English - Spanish School for primary and secondary students. After that, I continued my education as an Electronics Engineer at the University of Buenos Aires. Then, I trained as an MBA at the University of Salvador. I relocated to Germany for almost five years and then came back to the US. I have helped tutor students in high school, as well as classmates, family and friends. All of these students have received good grades as a result of the tutoring. Spanish, Math and Physics are my subjects of choice, and I believe the overall concepts of the subjects are the most important part to teach. In this way, you can discover more and will not have to depend on your memory. In my spare time, I enjoy hi-tech gadgets, computers, tennis, and know a lot about photography and optics.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I like for my students to understand the concepts, not memorize a formula.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Yes, if they understand the basic concepts of things, they can continue building on this independently.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Try to make the learning a success story. Always be positive.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try to temporarily change the subject and then return next time with another view or approach for the same concept.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

They need time and be calm so they don't get distracted by their own interruptions or noise in their heads.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Try to listen to him about what he likes and what he does not.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Learn about his/hers likings, sports, etc., to understand what they relate to in order to look for connections between subjects and their interests.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Try to remove their fears about the subject, and try to look at it from some funny side the student can enjoy more.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

At some point, some exercises on the subject have to be done in order to assert the assimilation of the subject.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Start with easy things first so the student is more confident in his management of the subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Asking to see the student's homework, how he solved issues, and of course try to understand from him directly what he does not like from the subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Try to do my best to understand how the student thinks about the subject, how to relate to something that the student is more amenable to and try to build from that point.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Their material from school and some books and multimedia clips for language and pronunciation.
