This is my third year teaching high school. I teach at an all boy's Catholic school and have previously taught all girls. I love teaching. I love math and I love when my students share that excitement for the subject. Even if my students don't love the subject, I love getting to see those students work through their challenges to reach the "a-ha" moment.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Education is the root of all possibilities in this life. Learning in school helps us to become critical thinkers, thoughtful, and informed. Life is nothing but learning.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would check to see why the student is struggling. I would ask, what is it that makes this difficult for you right now? With these questions answered, we would get right to work! Time to work on problems, ask questions, and get results.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I will not walk you through every problem step by step. I will guide you when you need it, and I will be there when you try again. Ultimately, you are your best teacher. I am here to nudge you and support you when you lack confidence.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would make the topic relatable. Why do you even need to know this stuff? That is the most commonly asked question when it comes to mathematics. Well, I promise you it is good for you. It is a creative subject even though we typically think of it as black and white, right and wrong. You have a goal; you want to get better grades. That will be motivating in itself.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I will teach you another way. I will explain it again in different terms. I will try to find a way that will click for you.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
It is really helpful to build a trust and relationship with a student right off the bat. You need to know that I am fighting for you. I want you to do well.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
I think it is important to be aware of the difference between not understanding something versus not understanding everything. Lots of students tend to make encompassing statements such as "I don't get this at all!" I think it is really important to work on those phrases and statements and work towards a positive attitude that can approach any problem.
