Certified Tutor

I am currently working towards a PhD in Neuroscience at Vanderbilt University. My research focuses on the various ways that human behaviors affect the brain and contribute towards obesity. I have developed substantial mathematical and statistical knowledge throughout my data analysis. In addition, I have published a variety of publications in my field, and regularly write and edit federally-funded grants. I organize and run two academic journal clubs, one of which focuses on teaching the foundations of research and neuroscience to undergraduate college students. Beginning in 2014, I have continued to volunteer as a mentor to students interested in the applied sciences. Outside of work, I am a classically trained percussionist who enjoys biking, playing football, and managing two fantasy football leagues.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student has their own way of learning, and one of the first things I do as a tutor is identify which style is most effective with my client.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Everyone can be motivated to learn on their own, and as a tutor, it is my job to help identify individualized sources of motivation for each student. If I have assisted a student in becoming motivated to learn, I have succeeded.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would break down the topic the student is struggling with into its basic components. This enables me to identify the source of the student's confusion so that we may tackle each issue head-on, building their confidence and ultimately resolving the larger problem.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

At the end of each topic area, I have my students reteach the topic to me. Describing the subject in their own words solidifies the material in their minds and highlights any additional areas for improvement.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Participating in tutoring should not be the same experience for a student as sitting in a classroom. During my sessions, I use a variety of techniques to engage students, ranging from basic flashcards to interactive learning tool iPad apps.
