What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that each child deserves kindness and respect at all times. It is my responsibility to instill a love for learning and help each child that I teach strive for excellence.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

My first session with a student would be to get to know a little about the student, their likes, favorite subjects and what they hope to get out of the tutoring. I would also give a short assessment of the subject area to help me guide my lessons

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help the student become independent in learning by assigning tasks to be completed on his/her own, in a certain reasonable time frame. Also, I would encourage questions on the material and have the student explain how this is important in his/her life.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would help a student with difficulty in a concept by changing up the instruction using varied techniques, reviewing lower concept skills.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would help a student stay motivated by varying my teaching styles and making the student an active participant in their own learning

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading skills are very important in reading comprehension. It is necessary to teach the skills of main idea, sequence, following direction, using the content, etc., in order to build good comprehension.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

When I begin to work with a student, I try to find out about his/her likes and dislikes relating to school. I build a sense of trust between us and try to make the student comfortable. It helps to start with a subject matter familiar to the student to build self confidence.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Students struggle when they don't know the material. I begin with review and positive comments and make them aware of what they do know and not what they don't know.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I use a variety of techniques. I use texts, worksheets, Internet games, and videos (depending on the subject).

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build confidence by starting with things a student is familiar with relating to the subject and build from there.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate by oral and written assessments, assigned work, participation, and cooperation.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Every child is different. Some are more visual. Some are auditory learners, and some are sensory learners. I try to make learning fun and meaningful.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use whiteboards, workbooks, videos, and games (especially for math and geography).
