What is your teaching philosophy?

As a teacher and a tutor, I believe my job is to provide students with links and tools so they can dissect and associate new concepts. Learning happens as the result of a rational thinking process.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student's needs and find out his/her learning style.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By providing adequate tools and rational-thinking skills.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By showing him/her how much progress can be accomplished and giving examples of useful practical applications of a particular topic.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Try a different learning approach and/or go back and reinforce previous concepts that are basic to learn the new concept or skill.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Breaking down problems into pieces, keeping them focused, and making them believe in their own abilities.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Try a different learning approach, and show them that people learn in different ways.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By showing them how they are making progress with a different learning approach and practicing in small steps.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By asking questions and letting the student (or parent) explain their needs, and assessing what is required at that level.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

White paper, pencil, calculator, and computer.
