Since a young age, I have had a strong affinity for math and science. From algebra and geometry to chemistry and physics, I loved making sense of the natural world using mathematical expressions and scientific principles. I studied Chemical Engineering at Virginia Tech and also completed minors in Green Engineering and Chemistry, giving me a further insight into the beauty of science as well as the need for new scholars to engineer a better future for the planet. My passion for math and science has continued to deepen as I grow older, and I have decided to help others achieve a love and passion for these subjects.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

A typical first session will include getting to know the personality of the student, including their interests, skills, and developmental areas. I'll then share a little bit about myself.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Like a spotter at the gym, a teacher should provide the support needed for a student to do their own heavy lifting. Students should be given a combination of procedural tasks to build mastery as well as real world application problems to build critical thinking and problem solving skills.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The most important process in becoming an independent learner is discovering your own capabilities for problem solving. A tutor/teacher should provide the scaffolding for a student to build their skills and confidence to the point that the student can rely on themselves in future. Becoming an independent learner also hinges on fostering curiosity in young people's minds, where they need to know more about their world and the opportunities that are available to them.
