Everyone deserves a solid education, and the job of a teacher is to ensure that every student enters the world with a strong foundation. Students learn in a variety of ways, so the goal of a teacher is to figure out how a student learns and then engage them to facilitate understanding of the material.

Its important for me to learn a little about the student. How do they study? When do they study? Then I like the student to learn about me so we can build a good teacher-student relationship. I want the student to feel comfortable to tell me that they are not understanding the material.

I can help a student to determine what works best for them. Then I employ that method every time they study. When students have a good learning process and study habits, they can learn any material.

For me it is important to build a good relationship with the student, and part of that involves learning what their hobbies and passions are. I think one of the best ways to learn challenging material is by relating the information to a hobby or interest. I think its also important to relate stories of how we have struggled during school, and then how we overcame those situations.

First, I seek to understand what exactly the student is having difficulty learning. Then, I also try to understand how they best learn, whether they are a visual learner, an audible learner, or manual (writing) learner. Then I employ techniques to teach the material that engages their learning style.

I think the best way is to relate the topic to a hobby or interest. If they learn to see the subject in a different way, they can start to see the subject as enjoyable instead of as a challenge.

I think one of the best ways to make sure a student understands is for them to explain the material back to me. Its role-reversal, where I pretend that I am the student and they are the teacher. I also have them complete additional examples without my assistance so I know they understand the material.

Words of encouragement and praise go a long way in building confidence. When a student completes something correctly on their own, I congratulate them and re-affirm that they can learn this material.

The best way to understand a student's needs is to ask questions and then listen. It also important to ask questions in a variety of ways in order to get the student to explain their needs.

When first working with a student, I bring visual examples to explain the material, which I then go over. During the session, I watch to see if the student takes notes or not. By presenting information in different ways, I am assessing which method seems to work best for the student to learn the material.

I use examples and materials that appeal to a student's interest or hobbies. That way the students are more motivated to read. When they have grasped the concept of reading comprehension through materials that appeal to them, they can transfer those skills to coursework.

I tailor my tutoring sessions to meet the needs of the students. For example, I will bring handouts to the session if the student is a visual learner.

As a teacher, I try to assess how a student learns best. Once I have determined a student's learning style, I adapt my materials to match that style. In addition, I learn a student's interests and hobbies so that I can relate some of the material to what interests the student.
