Hello!

First, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as a Merit and Terry Scholar at the University of Houston Honors College, pursing a bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology with a concentration in Pre-Medicine. I currently have a cumulative GPA of 3.901 and am expected to graduate in May 2018. I graduated with the IB diploma and was summa cum laude in the top 3% of my class. I have tutored students through various organizations in high school and college and was a recommended to tutor with Varsity Tutors.

My curriculum comprises of integrated technology and science courses such as Organic Chemistry, Genetics, Biochemistry, General Math and Chemistry. I believe that the use of technology in medicine will vastly improve medical practices and innovations. These classes will assist me in gaining profound knowledge in the sciences. I am willing to tutor subjects such as Chemistry, Math, Writing, and any IB class/topics.

In addition to classwork, I am also a member of the medical honor society, Alpha Epsilon Delta, and the American Medical Student Association. I am also working with the Bonner Leaders Program and have certification in leadership through the Ted Bauer Leadership Certificate Program. I am volunteering at the Texas Children’s Hospital at the Medical Center learning about the practices and day-to-day work. I am currently developing a service-learning program called Honors in Community Health for the greater Houston area. My goal is to help inspire a passion and goal for Houston residents through the power of education.

I am confident that my background and knowledge of community based service, coupled with my interest in science and education, I will work hard with fellow tutors to not only help educate, but mentor students to choose higher education. The greatest form of satisfaction comes from being able to help a struggling student get over the hurdle of a difficult question. I want to ensure that a difficult class will not discourage the students I tutor from continuing their education.

Remember: Everyday is a new day to write a page in your personal story, so keep moving forward! :)

What is your teaching philosophy?

Education is the most peaceful weapon for changing the world.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know the student's personality and figure out what they want to get out of their tutoring experience. Each student is different, and I want to cater my teaching style to each individual student.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Give a man a fish, feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime. I will not only provide answers to specific questions, but I will teach them specific concepts to help them understand the subject. I will also teach them effective studying habits and methods.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Pavlovian style. Have the students feel rewarded and happy every time they get through a subject or finish a set of questions. A student should not feel like a particular subject is so hard that they lose motivation to continue studying.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will ask the students specific questions to help me get a better understanding of what key piece of information they do not get. From there, I will explain the concept and provide simple sample questions that relate to the topic.
