I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I attended St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY and graduated May of 2012 with a Bachelors in Liberal Arts. I majored in Multi-Language (Spanish, French & Mandarin) and minored in Communications.

Personally, as a language student myself, I completely understand the struggles and frustrations that come when learning a language for the first time. It can become difficult to understand or comprehend, which then causes the student to shut down making it harder to learn. As a language tutor I want to help eliminate that stress and anxiety that students go through and make it a more pleasant learning experience. Languages enable us to speak with a diverse number of people and at the same time learn a bit of the culture that comes along with it. I not only want to help others speak other languages properly but understand the meaning in which certain things are said. I have always emphasized the importance in tone because the way one thing is said in one culture may be hurtful to another with a different perspective and way of life.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session, we would love to get to know each other and get comfortable with speaking to each other. After, I would want to know their level of understanding in whatever subject help is needed. I'd start with some simple exercises and go from there.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

At the end of every session I will give a mini verbal quiz on what was covered that day.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I help them realized how much knowledge they have by allowing them to tutor me. This is one method where I have the student recite the information back to me in a non-intimidating format.
