I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2010 with a B.A. in Mathematics as well as my secondary teaching licensure. Currently, I am pursuing my Masters in Educational Technology from Central Michigan University. I taught at an urban middle school in Denver for two years, and then moved to Altus, OK. I taught a couple semesters at the local community college as well as one year at the high school level. Needless to say, it hasn't been that long since I graduated, but my experience is all over the map! This experience has helped me be able to break ideas down to a middle school level while also being able to push students to their fullest potential.
When I teach or tutor, I believe that students learn more when they are doing rather than simply listening. Thus, I try to let you, the student, "hold the pencil" as much as possible. Of course I am here to help when needed, but I try to let the student get as many chances as possible to really master the concept. If a concept is new or the student is really stuck, I prefer to use a gradual release model of "I do/we do/you do"...I'll do the first problem, then I'll guide the student through a similar example, and then I'll let the student do some individually to build confidence.
One component of Varsity Tutors that I appreciate is getting to work with the same students repeatedly. Building a relationship allows both the student and myself to feel more comfortable, have more fun, and ultimately learn/accomplish more within an the time appropriated. I look forward to working with you!
