I am a college student, and I have worked with the YMCA in Lakeland, FL to assist in reading comprehension for students grades K-5. In both math and English classes my teachers/professors have used me as a secondary teacher to help those students that did not understand the material and as an editor for other student's papers.

Explain it a different way. Use the way they think, or what they like to help them.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Ask lots of questions, and encourage them to read books below their grade level that concern a subject pertinent to them.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Make it relate to what they like. Animals, food, books, etc.
