Alastair

Certified Tutor

I am a rising sophomore at Columbia University in the City of New York, a member of the Ivy League, where I have compiled a track record of academic success across a variety of disciplines including my majors in History and Political Science. I currently maintain a 3.96 GPA, with especially strong success in social science related fields and English courses. I am living in our Writers House next year, a selective, competitive residential space for students interested in a career in writing.

I am extremely passionate about the process of learning - the philosophy of teaching, the value of academic discussion, the development of a true appreciation for the classroom and for intellectual advancement. I believe my track record as a successful student - as someone who has had a strong first year in the Ivy League, who is currently researching with two professors, and who has prior tutoring experience - displays my profound desire to learn and to help others learn. I have a strong standardized testing record which complements the skills and motivation I have to teach.

In my spare time, I am constantly trying to help myself acquire new skills and to expand my intellectual foundation, whether that be through reading novels, learning languages or perusing academic journals. I know firsthand how valuable tutoring is, as it was crucial in helping me develop an Ivy League-caliber course load before I applied to college. A tutor helped me pass an entrance exam I had initially failed to gain acceptance to the right level of high school mathematics. I hope to pass this forward and help other students realize the kind of success I have experienced.

Ultimately, I see myself in academia, and working for Varsity Tutors is an experience I am using to help me explore my passion for education.
