I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I have a Masters degree in Foreign Language Teaching from the State University of New York at Oneonta, and my undergraduate degree is in early childhood education from San Buenaventura University in Cali-Colombia. My work in the classroom has been in the private as well as the public school setting. While in Colombia, I worked in a private preparatory bilingual school, and in the United States I have been working with the New York and Florida public school systems.

I have worked as a bilingual ESOL assistant for a dual immersion elementary. While I was working with a more diverse student population, I assisted the school administration and teachers interpreting between English and Spanish during parents-teachers conferences. I also use my Spanish native fluency to design newsletters, develop workshops with teachers and parents, and organize events to reach out to the school community. I worked with the Pinellas County School District in an International Baccalaureate (IB) magnet schoolas their Spanish teacher for the middle school program. I worked with seventh and eighth grade students. At this school, I teach by following a methodology for a differentiated instruction seeking 100% success. I also coordinate the Spanish club and organize cultural presentations with my students. Moreover, on the summer 2013, I was invited to join a team of teachers to write the language curriculum for the Pinellas County School district.

I have worked at the “Bennett Preparatory Bilingual School” which has given me practical experience in the understanding of cognitive development of younger and older children. In the process of caring for my students, I frequently develop strong relationship with their families. I explain their behavior and encourage home activities that support the well being and learning development of the student. I present to family members the curriculum and their students’ progress.

I have been a faculty member in the department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at SUNY College at Oneonta. Other tasks at SUNY-Oneonta were assisting in the promotion and coordination of a course with a service-learning component abroad in San Andrés Island - Colombia. In addition, I had responsibilities in managing trainers to deliver professional development workshops to student teachers in the elementary education program with foreign language concentration. I volunteered as Spanish teacher at one of the Oneonta elementary schools in a third grade class.
