I am a graduate from Bard College in upstate New York with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and the written arts. While at Bard, I wrote a psychology thesis on the neuro-correlates of empathy in atypical populations. Currently I am working on a novel, which draws on my scientific research on empathy through the lens of fiction. I am thrilled to be able blend my primary academic interests in such a rewarding fashion! In the past I’ve worked with students of all ages and backgrounds, from assisting immigrant students writing essays in a second language, to teaching creative writing and basic reading skills to students with a diagnosis of Autism, as well as helping strong, motivated students achieve the best work possible in an honors psychology or English classroom. I have an innate love of words, language, and science, and want to instill in students this love of concepts such as analytical essay writing, reading comprehension and analysis, basic and complex psychology concepts. I want to help students understand what methods of learning work best for them as unique individuals so they may utilize their own unique qualities for success.
As a strong analytical and creative writer, I am deeply aware of the need to establish a solid grasp of technical concepts before being able to play creatively with words. I’ve had a love of language since I was young, and find it endlessly fascinating that I can create worlds of my own in only a few sentences. Reading and writing have always been the means for me to explore concepts of empathy and human difference, which has then helped me further my study of psychology and interact with the world in a sensitive manner. Through studying psychology, I have developed an understanding of people through a strong grasp of the scientific method. I use this love of people and words to help others find the importance of empathy, potential, and patience, both in my teaching and writing. I deeply believe in the importance of the scientific method, as well the impact of voice through words, and hope to give others the gift of expressing themselves elegantly and powerfully, whether in an academic or personal sense.
I work to solve problems through a creative lens, so students can learn that there is not always just one way to work through difficult concepts, but that there is also an art to learning that can be extremely rewarding if you are given the tools to be confident in yourself and your work. It can be extremely difficult for students to thrive academically when they lack confidence in their own abilities, and my goal is to teach them not only the concepts and technical background necessary for good coursework, but also to instill within them a pride of their own accomplishments, as well as a knowledge of their potential to work hard and succeed.
