Tutoring review by Michael in Inglewood, CA
Tonight was a continuation of the probability material that we started last night. We had the benefit of the graded quiz that was returned in class today to work from, as well as from the additional problems online. He told me that he was feeling much more comfortable with the material. He is going to draw a diagram of the normal distribution and mark the area that he's looking for. That can often help the student determine what the math is that needs to be done to arrive at the correct answer. He seemed to find that a useful tip.

The student had to work on a poem for school, I assisted when she needed help. She is also making a study plan for the spelling bee. We reviewed all her flash cards. She did really well on Multiplication and her Spelling flashcards. I suggested she practice all of them until we meet again.

We started the session by reviewing the student's test from last week. We went over the questions that she got incorrect. Overall, she did well, but there is room for improvement. She knows all of the concepts and how to apply them. I established that she did not perform better on the test because she made minor mistakes that decreased her grade. She clearly knew all of the material on the exam and was able to pick up on her mistakes without me having to tell her. The student's test performance served to show her the importance of solving problems carefully and checking her work, and we will work to ensure she pays attention to these details. We then covered solving systems of equations by graphing and by substitution. The student has a quiz tomorrow covering only those two concepts, and she caught on rather quickly even after doing few examples. She seemed really pleased with this session; she grasped the material very quickly and was able to see the connection from the previous chapter (she was able to identify parallel lines, and identical lines by their equations).

Today we worked on review homework for his chapter test on chapter 9. He felt pretty good about the last few sections so we focused on the first half of the chapter, which I think made him a lot more confident.

We worked on online assignments for the student's classes, which included new study skills and material regarding Algebra 2. He finished the first module for Algebra 2 and is ready to take his first exam in that class. His progress is very good as the lowest grades he received on the assignments were one 80% and one 88%, while the rest are As.
