Michael: Centennial tutor

Certified Tutor

I received my Associate's Degree in Accounting from a community college in New York State. I tutored other students in accounting, finance, and math while earning my degree. I also home-school my two elementary children. In my professional life I have always trained others accounting concepts and other procedures. For that reason I tutor in Accounting, Math, and Finance.

I enjoy tutoring Accounting and Math because the concepts can be used in life for years to come. If you internalize certain principles, you will never forget them. So I try to keep it simple and break down problems so they are understandable and relatable.

My ideal job is a film director because, though I have a mind geared toward numbers, I love being creative. I get so much joy when I write, draw, and create videos and music with my family. I am a pretty easy-going person but I know the importance of a good education.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Keep it simple and as fun as possible.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Review the student's goals and build from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teach concepts and principles that can be applied to many questions.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Review how far we have come.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Shake it up a little. Try to look at it from a different angle. Always remind them of the basic ideas.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

First make sure the environment lends to learning. Then make sure we understand each word and why it was written.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Find out what they know and what they like. Then we can build from there.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Remind them of the end goal. Help them see how this hurdle can be a steppingstone to get to where they want to be.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Repetition and review are imperative to making sure things are sinking in. Switching the roles and have them teach me is a good way to review.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Show that they can do the work. Sometimes we get in our own way by saying, "I can't." When we see we can, it opens up a new world to us.
