Tutoring review by Ana in Bolingbrook, IL
We worked on reading today. He had to do his reading logs, so we read his chapter book out loud and did different activities for each chapter (main idea, who/ what/ when/ where/ why, main character, summary). It was a book he enjoyed so we had fun doing it. After 4 chapters, we went back to the multiplication and division we still had to finish from last week. Multiplication was much better today, and we finished learning long division and long division with decimals. He was in pretty good spirits and it helped him greatly. We finished the session practicing examples of decimal division. I assigned him homework: he has a math notebook now that I would like to make his own personal reference book of sorts. His first assignment--that I asked him to have completed by Tuesday--is to write all of his tables, one set per page, from 1-12. It's been great that he's wanting to learn and pays attention.

Tutoring review by Julie in Bolingbrook, IL
We reviewed sequences, probability, and combinatorics. Specific concepts we covered include: Sequences: - Solving problems that involve both arithmetic and geometric sequences. The step-by-step breakdown for these would be to, 1) write out the formula for the terms of the original sequence, 2) write out the formula for the terms of the "new," modified sequence, 3) write all terms in terms of the original term, 4) set equations equal to one another, and solve. Probability: - Binomial Theorem: Though the student initially struggled with this, but I think she is comfortable with the subject now. Combinatorics: - Again, figuring out when to use permutation, and when to use combination. A good way to deal with this problem is to think of combinatoric techniques on three "levels": 1) Multiplication, the most basic level, 2) Permutation, for cases in which repetition isn't allowed, 3) Combination, for cases in which different orderings of the same combination do not count as different instances. - Using logic: Figuring out whether an answer should be greater/lesser than another answer, and using that to reflect on what to do next. This was our last session. I really enjoyed working with the student - best of luck with her final!

Tutoring review by Jonna in Bolingbrook, IL
This session was great! The student worked so hard. We did practice problems with whole numbers that included rounding, adding and word problems. We will visit rounding some more in the future. We did practice of basic multiplication facts. I have left him with two websites that have games/ flashcards for him to get some extra practice. He does well with the lower numbers but once we get to 6-9 he struggles. We also did work with patterns and he had no problems. Division was a little tougher but I believe if he practices the multiplication facts he will get better. We will continue our work with multiplication.

Tutoring review by Hannah in Bolingbrook, IL
Today the student and I covered the biological basis of, evidence for, and effects of ECT; evidence for efficacy of treatment; and physiological mechanisms of ECT. She was positive, eager to learn, and she came very well-prepared. I explained a few ways to help interpret published journal articles in her future studies. She seemed satisfied. She was open to other interpretations of concepts she already was familiar with, and she immediately stopped me when things were unclear. She communicated any misunderstandings and asked excellent clarification questions.

In today's session we focused on finding derivatives of functions, specifically focusing on graphing them. This was the primary topic on her homework assignment, too. Once I was able to explain this concept to her, she was able to complete each of her homework problems with ease. She has additional homework from her professor that she can work on throughout the week that covers much of the same material.

We drafted a short response that the student will give during tomorrow's class for a debate on the environment. We practiced it and made a few corrections. I reminded her to practice for her oral reviews several times (the more she says it, the better it will sound when the time comes), as well as make note of certain words that are hard to say.
