The student and I tightened up his speech for school on the author R.L. Stine. We cut some of the language to make sure that it fit within the 1-minute time constraint. He and I also started working on the fifth grade math standards. I introduced him to the concept of exponents and the order of operations. We worked through a variety of problems, and he retained and understood much of what I taught. He also said he would work on the 18 vocabulary words I provided for him on Monday.

We worked on counting by fives and then we covered units of time. Once that was completed, we worked on telling time using a standard clock with a second, minute, and hour hand. The student was required to tell the time and write it in standard format.

The student and I had our first session today. We reviewed the basic structure and material that is tested on the exam and then reviewed the data sufficiency strategy. We covered both value and yes/no questions. I assigned DS 1 and 2 for homework. We will wrap DS next time we meet and we will move on to general problem solving strategies.

We finished outlining the student's essay on life in ancient Rome. I helped him pick out the main idea from the packet he was given and gave him examples of how to go a step further by taking that information and drawing some conclusions from it. We ended up using this analysis to create an interesting and rich introduction and conclusion. The student was amazed at how, by organizing his notes into an outline, he had essentially written the essay already. All he had to do now was put it all together in complete sentences. He did a very nice job and focused well. He was also surprised at how long it took, but how easy it was. Hopefully this will help him create better essays and help him learn to think critically when reading sources.
